Fad Diet Don’t Provide Long Term Results

Patient getting weight taken | O'Connor Health Center

When most people decide to lose weight, they don’t want slow and steady – they tend to want immediate and noticeable results. Any fad diet – whether it be low-carb and high-fat, prepackaged food, centered on a single superfood or a liquid meal plan – may give you fast results. The issue is that these diets have shown to not provide participants with long-term weight loss success.

Fad diets usually have a few of the same qualities. They restrict or even eliminate certain foods or food groups, make vague claims, and promise significant weight loss quickly. But, with such short-term success, you can hurt your chances of long-term weight loss success. When you have such a severe reduction in what you are consuming, the body tends to translate it to famine.

This translation can lower your metabolic rate, which is the rate your body burns calories and meant to increase your chances of survival. This reduces weight loss as the diet progresses. Most of the weight loss from these diets comes from water loss, which is dehydration. And what happens when you rehydrate? The weight returns. And it gets worse. When your body thinks it is experiencing famine, your body metabolizes muscle to use energy instead of burning body fat.

Our muscles need energy throughout the day, and when you have less muscle, it means fewer calories burned during physical activity and even at rest. While the combination of the two can reduce the rate of weight loss as you continue the fad diet, it makes it harder to keep the weight off, and your goal weight is virtually impossible to maintain.

After you’ve been on a diet and have reached your goal weight, you stop following it; it’s easy to revert to your old eating patterns. It is common for people to have been on these diets, and the weight they lost inevitably returns.
